TV Freak Scott Goodings is crazy about TV. Scott's first TV memory is an
episode of "Matlock Police" called "A Piece Of Cake". His first experience of
the medium in colour was seeing a Hector The Cat road safety commercial through
the window of the CBA bank in Cheltenham in 1975. Catch his regular reviews at

Valentine’s Day... it’s a good day for a wedding
The perfect TV inspired wedding? Don’t scrimp on wedding invitation stationery
like George and Susan (“Seinfeld”); pick a tasteful tune like Angry Anderson
crooning “Suddenly” for the walk down the aisle (Scott and Charlene,
“Neighbours”); choose a sophisticated reception centre (Kath and Kel, the
garage, “Kath and Kim”); check the wedding car (or suffer the consequences like
Dee and Toadie in their Commodore, “Neighbours”); pick a romantic SAFE
honeymoon spot and don’t have the groom fall out of the boat and drown while
rowing down the river (Amy Carson’s husband, “Carson’s Law”); and make sure you
leave the pets at home (unlike “The Brady Bunch”) , or you’ll have the dog
(Tiger) chasing the cat (Fluffy), and someone will end up wearing the cake
(Mike)!
Here are 10 TV weddings you can watch to make your special day that little bit
extra telly-special.
- Scott
Clark Kent and (a clone of) Lois Lane
Lois & Clark: The New Adventures Of Superman
Check out the episode
"I Now Pronounce You..." on Lois & Clark: The New Adventures Of Superman-Season
3 - Disc 4 (1995)
The live-action version of the Superman comics makes a great run for listing in
the ‘jump the shark’ hall of fame - what else can you say about a show that in
one episode has a wedding featuring the principal leads, a mad scientist
creating frog eating clones of the bride AND the American president, and Lois
getting amnesia. Redemption comes in the form of the great guest cast including
Tony Curtis as evil Dr Mamba, Brad Garrett (“Everybody Loves Raymond”) as a
reverend, and Fred Willard (the commentator in “Best In Show”) as the
President.
Sex and the City
Charlotte York and Harry Goldenblatt
Check out the episode
"The Catch" on Sex and the City-Season 6 - Disc 2 (2003)
Let’s get the vitals out of the way first – bride Charlotte wears a white silk
Badgley Mischka gown, Samantha’s in a matching black Gucci Georgette top and
skirt with black patent Manolo Blahniks, Miranda a black Luca Luca number, and
Carrie, of course, has to stand out in a purple Alexander McQueen Grecian dress
with black strappy Blahniks. The ceremony itself is a disaster; Charlotte
spills wine on her dress, and Miranda sets fire to the bride and groom, but as
Carrie points out, Charlotte’s first wedding to Trey MacDougal went off without
a hitch, yet that marriage was over before you could say 'impotence'!
The Young Doctors
Dr John Forrest and Dr Liz Kennedy
Check out
The Young Doctors - Disc 1 (1976)
Having previously stepped in at the last minute to stop her marrying Dr Ben
Fielding (Eric Oldfield), Dr John (Alan Dale) skips Albert Memorial for
Melbourne where he makes an honest woman of his sweetheart Dr Liz (Rebecca
Gilling). In perhaps the shortest and most tragic marriage since James Bond
(George Lazenby) married Countessa Teresa di Vicenzo (Diana Rigg) in “On Her
Majesty’s Secret Service” though, Liz is electrocuted shortly after when she
turns on a faulty lamp. The perm Alan Dale’s sporting, you’d be sure he’d been
the one having a couple of thousand volts surging through his body!
Dallas
Lucy Ewing and Mitch Cooper (first time around)
Check out the episode
"End of the Road" on Dallas-Season 4 - Disc 2 (1981)
Ewing granddaughter Lucy’s love life was always a litany of disasters. A series
of fiancés or lovers that turned out to be conmen, gay, her uncle, or they
slipped into an irreversible coma. Then there was Mitch Cooper. So good (or
bad) she married him twice! Check out this episode, not only to see the first
time they tie the knot, but also watch Uncle J.R. trying to crack on to Mitch’s
sister Afton. This episode is a piece of TV crossover heaven. Lucy’s parents,
Ewing black sheep Gary and wife Val, had spun-off to LA and “Knots Landing”,
but return to Dallas for the ceremony, perhaps repaying J.R. for having just
spun to the east coast for an oil conference and a ratings boost for the
fledgling soap sibling “Knots Landing”.
Footballer's Wives 1
Kyle Pascoe and Chardonnay Lane
Check out the episode
"On The Ball" on Footballer's Wives-Season 1 - Disc 1 (2002)
Not even the hen’s night disaster that saw Chardonnay’s fake breasts charred
and grilled after a stray flame from a candle set alight the Hawaiian lei she
was wearing could stop this (literally) fairy tale wedding. Sticking to the
‘Snow White’ script, ‘Prince Charming’ Kyle awakens the sleeping
dressed-in-pink Chardonnay with a smooch, while seven kids dressed as dwarves
look on – only topped by the couple’s ‘Jesus in a manger’ nativity themed
christening of the couple’s child that opens Series 2.
Footballer's Wives 2
Harley and Shannon
Check out episode 4 on
Footballer's Wives-Season 3 - Disc 2 (2002)
Earls Park’s Scouse lovebirds Hayley Lawson and Shannon Donnelly (surely based
on real life couple Manchester United’s Wayne Rooney and Coleen McLoughlin) had
their problems getting to the altar – Sharon paranoid about her looks and
indulging in a nose job, and jealous of the attention Harley received from
female fans famously responding to an autograph request ‘Can you make it out to
Andrea?’ with the cutting ‘Why not make it “slut”, it’s shorter’ – but come the
big day they didn’t mind sharing the limelight by inviting Peter Andre’s better
half Jordan. As they soar away from the reception cast adrift in a hot air
balloon, they set down in a beautiful parkland honeymoon setting and it’s all
so perfect – but pan back and see they’ve landed in a safari park, with a
hungry king of the jungle cruising their romantic savannah setting. Tune in to
see if they make day 2 of married life.
Neighbours
Bouncer and Rosie
Check out
Neighbours-Defining Moments - Disc 2 (1985)
It mightn’t have had Angry Anderson crooning like he did at Scott and
Charlene’s wedding, it didn’t have the drama of Mark Gottlieb jilting Annalise
Hartman for Jesus at the altar, nor the tragic honeymoon that befell Dee and
Toadie’s exchanging of vows, but my favourite “Neighbours” nuptials are that of
Bouncer the Labrador to Rosie the sheepdog – or at least the dream Bouncer had
about it’s possibility the day the Mangles were reminiscing about Joe and
Kerry’s wedding. If Jim Robinson could fall for a girl half his age like Zoe
Davis, why couldn’t Bouncer experience puppy love over Clarrie McLachlan’s
faithful companion?
Friends
Check out the episode
"The One with Ross's Wedding" on Friends-Series 4-Volume 3 (Episodes 17-23)
(1998)
“Family Ties” did it, "The Sullivans" and “Neighbours” did it … went to London
and shot ‘special’ episodes, I mean. “Friends” just made it that extra special
by including a gala wedding – with royalty! (Albeit the divorced Duchess of
York, Sarah Ferguson). Ross’ nuptials to “Cold Feet’s” Rachel Bradley are
ruined by “Friends” own Rachel (Jennifer Aniston) turning up; Joey’s all
‘Austin Powersed’ out with his constant ‘London, baby’ speak, but at least
we’re spared the usual Rembrandts “I’ll Be There For You” opening theme;
instead we get a bit of punk spirit of ’76 with The Clash’s “London Calling”.
Before you can shout out loud ‘I live by the river’, you’ll be dazzled by the
obligatory double decker bus rides, and cameos from Dr Gregory House (Hugh
Laurie), “Ab Fab’s” Eddy and Gran Monsoon, and Richard Branson flogging Union
Jack t-shirts in his best TV role since his “Baywatch” cameo.
Cheers
Nick Tortelli and Loretta
Check out the episode
"Battle of the Exes" on Cheers-Season 2 - Disc 3 (1982)
Receiving an invite to ex-husband Nick’s upcoming wedding (complete with a nude
photo of the bride and groom to be included inside the envelope), Carla cons
Sam into being her date to prove she is well and truly over her vile ex. Look
for Nick’s open fly during the ceremony - and his new wife Loretta, played by
Jean Kasem, real-life wife of Casey, voice of Shaggy in the “Scooby Doo, Where
Are You!” cartoons.
Mash
Major Margaret "Hot Lips" Houlihan and Lt. Colonel Donald Penobscott
Check out the episode
"Margaret's Marriage" on Mash-Season 5 - Disc 3 (1980)
After a buck’s night at The Swamp where he is literally ‘plastered’ chest to
toe by BJ and Hawkeye, Lieutenant Colonel Penobscott finally makes it to the
altar with Hot Lips, despite thinking he has a broken leg. Klinger is told it’s
‘women only’ when he turns up to the hen’s night, but donates the wedding dress
his uncle wore to get out of World War I for the bride to wear anyway – getting
in the good books early for when Klinger loses Hot Lips’ wedding ring in a
later episode.
